Osaka Castle was built in in 1583 by warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Construction of Osaka Castle started in 1583, and was completed in 1597.

How Many Times Was Osaka Castle Destroyed And Rebuilt?

While historical records indicate that Osaka Castle was damaged numerous times and rebuilt, there appear to be four pivotal events of destruction:

  • During the Seige of Osaka, a battle between Toyotomi’s son, Hideyori, and warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu, the castle was almost completely destroyed in 1615 and rebuilt in 1620 by the Tokugawa shogunate.
  • In 1665, the castle tower was destroyed by lightning and fire, and the castle remained without a tower for a long period.
  • During the Boshin War (1868-1869), the castle was again destroyed.
  • Air raids during World War II targeted Osaka Castle (that served as an arsenal), and the castle suffered some damage.
